Although 45% of providers are offered benefits from their employers, only 32% access benefits through their employer. Other Household members are the means of accessing health benefits for 34% of our providers. Another 10% of our providers qualify for either Healthy Families or MediCAL health programs and 9% have no benefits at all. Although many employers offer health benefits, often it reduces an employees already low paycheck and many providers are not choosing to have coverage. The written comments offered by providers indicate that benefits are needed and a determinant of whether a provider will stay in the field. This survey did not delve further in to the dynamics behind these choices, it may be an area for further research.
How can our providers be assisted in staying in the field
Many providers wrote answers to this question. Not surprisingly, 63% of the comments focused on needing better wages and pay. 25% noted that benefits were issues for them. Another 19% noted that assistance in paying for their education would help them stay in the field.
In research by Marci Whitebrook, the provider’s perceptions of their environments and coworker relationships were significant indicators of turnover. Therefore our survey asked providers to rate their work environment on a 5 point Likert scale. The vast majority of respondents rated their environments at 4 or 5.
